2nd BCT Media Links

This blog centralized media links for the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division during its deployment from Korea to Iraq as part of OIF 2.5, Aug 2004 - July 2005. It was updated daily over the year, with only sporadic updates since. It is left on-line for historical interest (although many links are likely now broken) and as a tribute to the 2nd BCT servicemen who lost their lives serving in Iraq. May they rest in peace and may their legacy be forever remembered.

Articles 1.8.2005

The Kansas City Star has an article on a wounded 2nd BCT Marine. Sgt. Kyle Tunell, presumably of the 2/5 Marines (the article didn't specify, but said he deployed to Ramadi in September), was wounded 11 days after his arrival in Iraq when a rocket propelled grenade hit his humvee. "He suffered a concussion, multiple contusions and a brain hemorrhage. The blast left shrapnel in his head and leg." Sgt. Tunell is presently at Camp Pendleton undergoing rehabilitation and speech therapy. The article reports that members of a local Rotary Club paid for a flight home so that Sgt. Tunell could be with his wife and daughter over Christmas. Sgt. Tunell will go before a board in several months, who will decide on whether he will return to active duty or receive a medical discharge. If he leaves the Marines, he plans to return to Missouri and finish college.

An Associated Press article evaluates the expected increase in attacks before the election. According to Air Force Brig. Gen. Erv Lessel, who is deputy chief of staff for strategic communications in Iraq, "no intelligence indicating specific plans for a major attack but it is a concern. He said the insurgents' biggest weapon was their ability to instill fear." As an example of a positive trend, Brig. Gen. Lessel cites Ramadi: "The people in Ramadi are tired of the insurgents, tired of foreign fighters that are there, and increasingly want to support the multinational forces," he said."
