2nd BCT Media Links

This blog centralized media links for the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division during its deployment from Korea to Iraq as part of OIF 2.5, Aug 2004 - July 2005. It was updated daily over the year, with only sporadic updates since. It is left on-line for historical interest (although many links are likely now broken) and as a tribute to the 2nd BCT servicemen who lost their lives serving in Iraq. May they rest in peace and may their legacy be forever remembered.

The Toledo Blade, OH, carries an article on 7 area families who lost a relative in the war in Iraq, including 2 2nd BCT soldiers. Pfc. Dennis Miller, Jr., of the 2-72nd Armor, was killed on 11.10.2004 when his tank was ambushed by insurgents. Pfc. Jason Sparks, of the 1-503rd was killed on 9.8.2004 near Fallujah. Pfc. Sparks father was interviewed in the article:

"The young man's father, Scott Sparks, hopes people will remember his son's ebullient personality. "His legacy is probably that he was just so well-liked," Mr. Sparks said. "He touched so many lives in very positive ways."The death of Private Sparks hasn't changed his father's opinion of the war. The elder Sparks served in 2003 with the 179th Airlift Wing in Kuwait. "I feel it's important that we finish the job, but I also think it's important that we start reporting the good things that are happening over there." He pointed out how American troops are helping to rebuild Iraq, including schools."

A Knight Ridder article discusses the upcoming election and claims that the Sunni population may sit out the upcoming election. One quote: "there are neither voter registration centers nor any registered voters in the Sunni strongholds of Fallujah and Ramadi, according to the Independent Electoral Commission, which is in charge of the Jan. 30 election." An LA Times article on the election says the provinces of Nineveh (which contains Mosul) and Anbar (which contains Fallujah and Ramadi) will allow voters to "establish their credentials on the day of balloting". Thus, the participation in those two regions won't be known until the election day.
