Shackelford had been offered a position in the Army Special Forces while in Korea. According to his mother, "When he found out they were going to Iraq, he withdrew his (Special Forces application) packet, and he called me and said, 'Mom, I'm going to Iraq. I'm not leaving my men to some sergeant that they don't know. I've trained them. I'm going with them." Staff Sgt. Shackelford had also previously served a tour of duty in Kosovo.

The LA Times (reg req'd) has an article on the 2nd BCT in Ramadi, with quotes from 2nd BCT Commander Col. Gary Patton and a few others. Some main points from the article:
- The region as a whole is relatively calm. However, insurgents are apparently focusing efforts on intimidation of locals and coordinated attacks on U.S. patrols and convoys.
- Humvees containing Col Patton have been hit by roadside bombs 7 times since the arrival of the 2nd BCT.
- Col. Patton is "deploying another unit" to Ramadi from the less hostile areas of western Iraq. The article did not say which unit.
- At least one promising example is given of a mob of local civilians attacking insurgents who planted a roadside bomb.
Col Patton is also quoted in another LA Times article on Iraqi police forces.
