Articles 11.1.2004
WISH TV from Indianapolis has an article on the combat fatality of Pfc. Stephen Downing, who was killed from enemy small arms fire in Ramadi on 10.28.2004. Pfc. Downing, of the 2-17th Field Artillery, had re-enlisted in the military 5 years after leaving the Army National Guard. He is the father of two children.
An AP Article says Pfc. Downing enlisted in the Army last year. "His father and stepfather told him they wished they could go in his place, so he didn't have to be there," said Downing's mother, Stella Maynard of Burkesville, KY. "And he said, 'No. I don't want to be there, but it's my turn to protect you.'"
The Stars & Stripes indicates Pfc. Downing is the 5th soldier from the 2-17th artillery killed in Iraq, all from combat wounds.

The Chicago Tribune has an article about mortar attacks on bases around Ramadi. It follows the actions of the 1-9th Infantry and 2-17th Field Artillery (with quotes from several soldiers) as they counteract the insurgent activity.
